Special Camper Recognitions

Summer is a special time at Camp Nakanawa. We take time to formally recognize campers and staff that have made a big impact on the camp-wide community. In order to honor going above and beyond, we’ve created a system for recognizing their hard work and giving them a giant hug. This is our way of saying, “THANK YOU” for everything you’ve done to make this year great!

Felt Letter

The first and most important award is a team “felt letter”. This is given to each camper by her team during both sessions of camp and the basic requirements to receive this award are as follows:

  1. Maintain a positive attitude toward camp life.
  2. Demonstrate respect for all Nakanawa rules, regulations, and property, especially concerning the cleanliness of the cabin area and regular attendance at classes and camp activities.
  3. Demonstrate consistent consideration of others during rest hour and at bedtime.
  4. No gum chewing, except when given by camp.
  5. No candy, except when given by camp.
  6. No food, except that served in the dining hall, camp store or given by camp.
  7. You may not go into town, except when accompanied by a counselor and given permission by camp.
  8. No use of illegal or non-prescription drugs.
  9. No smoking, vaping, or any like type.

Lady of the Bracelet

Junior Camp - 6th grader

Given by the Amazon and Valkyrie Teams and presented to the Director at the Valkazon Party by the Amazon and Valkyrie Captains. To be awarded on Trophy Night to the Junior camper who in the opinion of the Counselors has exemplified in speech and actions throughout the camp season the most beautiful spirit of loyalty and helpfulness.

Lady of the Necklace

Intermediate Camp - 8th grader

Given by the Valkyrie Team and presented to the Director at the Valkyrie Surprise Party by the Valkyrie Captain. To be awarded on Trophy Night to the Intermediate camper who in the opinion of the Counselors has exemplified in speech and actions throughout the camp season the most beautiful spirit of loyalty and helpfulness.

Lady of the Cup

Senior Camp - tent row or 3rd year senior

Given by the Amazon Team and presented to the Director at the Amazon Weenie Roast by the Amazon Captain. To be awarded on Trophy Night to the Senior camper who in the opinion of the Counselors has exemplified in speech and actions throughout the camp season the most beautiful spirit of loyalty and helpfulness.

Four-Week Session Awards

Each activity has awards during the four-week session. At Trophy Night, certain activities award “medals” to the most outstanding girls. In Junior Camp the girls receive a medal for swimming, diving, canoeing, arts & crafts, tennis, nature, glee club, games, drama, tumbling, archery, wall and posture. In Intermediate Camp the medalists receive a pewter charm for swimming, diving, canoeing, arts and crafts, archery, glee club, sailing, drama, dance, bells, tennis singles, tennis doubles, golf, wall, table tennis singles, table tennis doubles. In Senior the medalists receive a pewter bar pin for all the activities mentioned for Intermediate plus riflery. Riding awards a cup in all three camps.

Most Outstanding New Camper

Four-Week Junior, Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Most outstanding new camper
  • Received by unanimous vote by the counselor staff for new camper 
  • Awarded a hand carved cedar cross made by Carson Tays in the late 1970’s

Silver Letter Team Award

Four-Week Junior, Intermediate & Senior Camps

Awarded to outstanding team members during the four-week session. The girls are voted on by their respective teams.  Recipients are announced at Final Team Meetings at the close of camp.  They are Sterling girls and the team uses the definition of sterling as a guideline in choosing these girls:

S – Simplicity, she is not pretentious

T – Truthfulness, putting others before herself

E – Eagerness to help others at all times

R – Righteousness, putting God before all others

L – Loyalty, to herself and then to others

I – Individuality, being different from her constant surroundings

N – Naturalness, being herself at all times

G – Graciousness, being able to appreciate every small thing done for her

Two-Week Junior & Intermediate Camps

  •  Most outstanding camper 
  •  Voted on by the counselor staff and awarded at the awards ceremony on the final day of camp
  • Possesses the qualities we all strive for such as friendliness, helpfulness, loyalty and honor and she exhibits the true meaning of the Spirit of Nakanawa
  • Receives a small 14k gold “N” as recognition for this award

War Canoe

Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Great honor to be chosen as 1 of the 10 participants with a Cox stationed in the rear of the canoe 
  • Must be a qualified stern to try out and be chosen by the Cox to participate 
  • Competes in one race and one drill during the camp season

Skipperette and Skipper in Sailing

Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Show sailing knowledge and expertise to earn the skipper or skipperette title – skipper is the highest
  • Award earned by club classifications to participate in Regatta for this final event

Varsity Softball and Soccer

Four-Week Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Participants are chosen by activity counselors for these final events

Tennis

Two-week & Four-Week Junior, Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Singles and Doubles, No Doubles in Two-Week Sessions
  • Awards: Singles for Junior Camp – Medal, Singles & Doubles for Intermediate Camp – Pewter Charm, Singles & Doubles for Senior Camp – Pewter Bar Pin

Riding

Two-Week Junior & Intermediate Camps and Four-Week Junior, Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Top riders in each camp chosen to ride for the cup class and the Horse show judge may choose additional participants to join the cup class competition
  • Riders judged on English Equitation and ability to ride and handle horse at a walk, trot, and canter
  • Dining hall recognitions for the Dusty Bottom Club when a rider takes a fall from a horse and gains membership to the club
  • Awards: Two-Week Sessions – Silver Medallion, Four-Week Sessions – Riding Cup (1 per camp)

Tally-Ho

Four-Week Junior Camp

  • Riding club – best riders chosen by the riding staff
  • Tally-Ho rides in the cup class and the Horse show judge may choose additional participants for the cup class competition

Dolphin in Swimming & Diving

Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Requires perfecting the front dive in layout position, front dive in pike position, back dive, front dive in tuck position, back dive in pike position and several optional dives – Diving
  • Requires perfecting the freestyle, backstroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and breaststroke – Swimming
  • Swimming strokes and dives are judged by the waterfront staff to pass
  • Recognition on Dolphin Achievement Sign in the Wigwam

Whale in Swimming & Diving

Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Requires expert skills in the front dive in layout position, front dive in pike position, back dive, front dive in tuck position, back dive in pike position and several optional dives – Diving
  • Requires expert skills in the freestyle, backstroke, sidestroke, elementary backstroke and breaststroke – Swimming
  • Swimming strokes and dives are judged by the waterfront staff to pass
  • Highest achievement that can be attained in swimming and diving. If you become a whale in swimming, diving and a blade in canoeing, you are considered a “Triple Whale”. This rarely happens but it has been attained.

Shark in Competitive Swimming

Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Highest achievement in distance and race swimming
  • Must swim 45 miles during the four-week session and attain the required speed in racing

Blade in Canoeing

Junior, Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Most proficient canoers
  • Requires mastering the 8 basic canoeing strokes of bow, backwater, pull-to, push-away, front sweep, back sweep, j-stroke and j-sweep
  • Must pass a certain number of lines and landings including slide-in and head-on landings
  • Only one person in the canoe, can only be strived for after becoming a qualified stern (passing lines and landings in the stern of a canoe with a partner in the bow)
  • Recognition on Canoe Achievement Sign in the Wigwam (Intermediate & Senior Camps)

American Archer in Archery

Intermediate & Senior Camps

  • Follow the guidelines of the National Archery Association and shoot from 15 yards, 20 yards, 30 yards, 40 yards, and 50 yards; each distance requires five rounds of 6 arrows and a certain score must be attained at each level
  • Recognition on American Archer Achievement Sign in the Wigwam American Archer title received upon completion of qualifications.

Expert in Riflery

Senior Camp

  • Twenty-two caliber rifles are used and National Riflery Association regulations and guidelines are observed; a certain number of targets are shot from 50 feet in the prone, sitting, kneeling and standing positions
  • Recognition on Riflery Achievement Sign in the Wigwam
  • Expert Rifleman title received upon completion of qualifications
