Camp Philosophy

The Camp Nakanawa philosophy is a traditional, structured camp for girls offering a program designed to enable each camper to acquire skills in various activities in an atmosphere that develops character and a spirit of unselfishness. It is a fun environment where you can make lifetime friendships and gain true self-confidence.

Two-Week Session
Thursday, June 13 to Saturday, June 29

Four-Week Session
Saturday, June 29 to Monday, July 29

Orientation & Certifications

Staff Orientation (required): Thursday, June 13 – Sunday, June 16
Climbing Wall Certification Class: June 111 (arrive by late afternoon on June 10)
Riding Staff: (arrive by June 10 if possible)
Lifeguard Training Certification Class: June 10 – June 13 (arrive by morning of June 10)

Camp Location & Contact Information

Camp Nakanawa is located in Crossville, Tennessee just off of interstate 40 on the Cumblerland Plateau. The camp is in a rural area of the Mayland community with proximity to several larger cities.

Camper Demographics

Two-Week Session Junior Camp

Ages: 8-11  (2nd –5th Grades)
Camper/Counselor Ratio: 1:3

Two-Week Session Intermediate Camp

Ages: 12-14 (6th – 8th Grades)
Camper/Counselor Ratio: 1:4

Four-Week Session Junior Camp

Ages: 8-12 (2nd – 6th Grades)
Camper/Counselor Ratio: 1:3

Four-Week Session Intermediate & Senior Camp

Ages: 12-17 (7th –11th Grades)
Camper/Counselor Ratio: 1:6 

Counselor Responsibilities & Guidelines

Give of yourself to the campers – always put them first above all else.

Being a camp counselor can be the most rewarding and gratifying job you can ever pursue. You will learn more about yourself, others, and discover talents. 

Responsibilities
  • Cabin Counselor
      • Role model and leader to a group of 4 to 8 girls living in a cabin together
  • Activity Instructor
      • Teach and assist with one or more activities
  • Committee Assignment
      • Serve on one or two committees of your choice
Guidelines
  • The minimum staff age is 18 (prefer completion of college freshman year).
  • In order to promote the positive character guidelines supported by Camp Nakanawa, this is a substance-free environment (smoking,  alcohol, or drugs will not be permitted).
  • Piercings, other than the traditional one hole each ear, and tattoos are discouraged and should be covered while at camp.
  • As a counselor, you will be giving up a great deal of privacy and comfort along with working long and demanding hours while adhering to camp policies that may not reflect your way of living (curfews, time on, time off, lack of privacy, etc.)

Salary and Time Off

Starting Salary:
$325/week plus room, board, and laundry ($325 bonus for 6 weeks) *Depending on education level*

Time Off:
Two-Week Session – Two 1/2 Days Off (6 hours each)
Four-Week Session – Two 1/2 Days Off (6 hours each), One Day Off (12 hours), One 24 Hour Leave, One 36 Hour Leave Between Sessions
