Campfires Go Out But Traditions Last Forever

Tradition is the bond that holds us together and the glue that keeps The Spirit of Nakanawa alive. Some of the earliest core traditions, including secret meeting spots and team distinctions, have remained throughout the years, while others have faded with time. Come and experience it for yourself and you might understand why the biscuits are such a big deal around here.

Amazons

In Greek mythology, the Amazons were members of a race of women warriors who displayed both courage and dignity. They were often depicted as resembling the goddess Athena, armed with spears and helmets.

Valkyries

Valkyries were maidens of the god Odin. Valkyries were charged with choosing those slain in battle who were worthy of a place in Valhalla. They were usually shown riding horses, wearing helmets and brandishing swords.

Since The Beginning

Many of the ideas that became traditions sprang from the campers of that first summer including special ties and meeting places. All competitions centered on Amazon and Valkyrie with a system of distinctions in which both individuals and teams could earn points.

Council Ring

A timeless institution of campfire comradery. For over 100 years, campers have taken part in this ceremony rooted in Native American traditions.

Tent Row

Located in our Senior camp, Tent Row is more than just cabins for our eldest campers. It is a place where bonds are built and memories are made.

Crow's Nest

A favorite gathering place for glee club classes, sharing sunsets, enjoying waterfront activities, Sunday night Vespers and sharing quiet time with a friend.

Wigwam

The most famous structure at Nakanawa. Built in 1920 and located in Senior Camp, the Wigwam is listed on the National Register of Historic Buildings.
