The Spirit of Nakanawa: A Centennial History
Camp memories come alive in The Spirit of Nakanawa: A Centennial History book. To celebrate Nakanawa’s 100th birthday, Directors Ann and Pepe Perron commissioned the publication of a beautiful coffee-table style, hardcover book to tell about Camp Nakanawa’s amazing story.
The Spirit of Nakanawa: A Centennial History was researched by author and longtime counselor Margaret Matens. This beautifully-bound, 192 page volume includes her engaging narrative, surrounded by 750 fascinating photographs. Many of the photos were taken by photographer Rick Dreves and capture the unique aura of camp. This keepsake volume takes you through each decade of camp history, from the creation of Lake Aloaloa in 1913 to the present. The origin of camp’s rich traditions, profiles of beloved counselors and staff, and memorable moments of camp life are all here for you to enjoy.
The shape and design of the volume is reminiscent of a scrapbook. Scattered through its pages are hundreds of photographs of actual camp memorabilia — faded ties, train tickets, laundry slips, sit-upons, melted candles, old medals, TR jackets and much more. These nostalgic items, along with great archival photographs, bring to life the stories of what it was like to be at camp from its earliest beginnings to today.
The Spirit of Nakanawa is a “must have” book for every “Nakanawa Girl,” “Nakanawa Family,” and “Nakanawa Friend”. It will make a great gift for any occasion. The cost of the book is $100 — one dollar for each of Nakanawa’s years represented.

Centennial Book Author - Margaret Hawkins Matens
Margaret, who has spent nearly 40 summers at Nakanawa in various roles, wrote Nakanawa: The First Fifty Years in 1981, and has been fascinated with camp’s history ever since. A retired English teacher and school administrator, Margaret is also a published author and illustrator. Her husband, Jack, spent a summer on the Nakanawa staff, and her sister Jugie was both a camper and counselor. Daughters Murray and Morgan started camp at ages 4 and 7. Even Margaret’s mother, Julia Hawkins (who, at age 101, recently set a world record in the 100-meter dash!) came to camp for two summers to help Margaret teach the Nature program she founded. Clearly, Nakanawa runs deep in Margaret’s veins, and it shows in this amazing book.
